| Jacob was born on Valentines Day in Sudbury, Ontario. He loves his older brother Joshua and loves to do everything his 'big' brother does! On December 6, 2003 Jacob woke up with what looked like a swollen left eye (we thought nothing of this as he had fallen on his train set the previous day). By supper time that night we noticed that his pupils were uneven (the left was considerably smaller than the right) we took him to the emergency department in Sudbury, where we were eventually referred to a Pediatrician and an MRI was done three days later. Unfortunatly an IV could not be started and we would have to return two days later to have a second MRI done. An IV was eventually started in Jacobs head and the contrast solution could be injected and would soon show the enormous size of his tumor. Once the MRI was complete we were on our way to CHEO (Children's Hospital of Eastern Ontario) via Air Ambulance. We arrived at CHEO on December 12 and were welcomed by the wonderful team on 4 North. |

| After two weeks of testing involving various scans, a biopsy, bone marrow aspirate, and a port-a-cath (click on 'port-a-cath' to learn more about how it works) insertion Jacob was diagnosed with Neuroblastoma stage 4S. Neuroblastoma is a malignant tumor of the sympathetic nervous system. Jacob's tumor was found in his neck and is called a 'cervical tumor'. The tumor extended into 3/4 of his neck and branched out to the base of the scull and down into the chest. The Bone Marrow aspirate also showed the presence of tumor cells in his bone marrow. The biopsy results from CHEO showed that the tumor had unfavourable histology (response to treatment) placing him in the intermediate risk group for Chemotherapy, but the results from 'Shimata'(international study group) showed that the tumor had favorable histology. With the combined results of all the tests the Oncologists placed Jacob on an eight cycle Chemotherapy protocol, with re-testing after the first four rounds (because of the difference in histology, if the tumor was resectable after the first four rounds they would remove the tumor at that point). Jacob would be scheduled to start his first round of Chemotherapy on December 26, 2003. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
